How ceramic 3D printing can change the way we think about ceramic tiles.
Traditional ceramic tiles are made using molds, which means every tile in a series is exactly the same. This limits the shapes, textures, and compositions that can be created.
By using ceramic 3D printing, there is no need for molds.
Every tile can be different while still fitting together as part of one larger composition.
This opens the door to new forms, deeper textures, and three-dimensional surfaces that were difficult or impossible to create before.
For me, the technology is not the goal, it is a tool that makes it possible to create a new visual language for ceramics.
As part of the collection, I collaborated with a woodworker to create two pieces that combine ceramic 3D printing with traditional woodworking. The sculptural front panels are made from 3D printed ceramic, while the structure is crafted from Canadian oak.
The collaboration brings together two very different materials and ways of making. The warmth and natural character of the wood balance the precision and texture of the printed ceramic, creating objects that celebrate craftsmanship, material, and contemporary production.
